Teach Us To Pray

Prayer Point 12 - April 19, 2021

“Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1) is what one of the disciples said to Jesus as He finished a time of prayer. I tend to think that this particular disciple, as well as the others, were beginning to make the connection between Jesus’ prayer life, and the power He ministered with. Nobody had heard teaching quite like this Rabbi. He had tremendous authority on His words. He healed all manner of sicknesses. He commanded demons to depart and they obeyed. Jesus spent much time alone talking to His Father in Heaven, which is what He then taught His disciples to do. Brothers and sisters, let’s regain this “teach us to pray” mentality once again. We need the power of God in our churches like never before. Now that’s something to pray about!

Prayer Point 11 - April 12, 2021

“Jesus wept” (John 11:35). Those two words tell us so much about our Lord and Savior. Of course, we read this as Jesus came to Lazarus’ tomb to miraculously raise Him from the grave. He knew his friend was going to be resurrected from death, but was still deeply moved with compassion. You know, sometimes in life, we feel despair. The only prayers we seem to be able to muster are with our tears. Friend, if tears are your only prayers today, you’re in good company. Jesus has been there too. Hang in there. The season of sadness will eventually change. Perhaps something very wonderful is right around the corner. As Christians, we grieve, but we never lose hope. Our God is the resurrection and the life. Now that’s something to pray about!

He Prayed Again

Prayer Point 10 - April 5, 2021

A good friend recently texted me about the Scripture passage in James chapter five, which tells us a little about Elijah’s prayer life. James tells us that Elijah prayed and the rain stopped for three and a half years. James 5:18 goes on to tell us that the prophet “prayed again” and the rains came and the land became fruitful after the lengthy drought. The words “prayed again” really stuck out to me. How much more would happened if we would simply pray—again. Maybe you find yourself in a spiritual drought. The good news is that your next prayer might just open up the heavens and make life fruitful again. No matter how long things have seemed dry, let’s be those who pray again and again. Now that’s something to pray about!

Prayer Point 09 - March 29, 2021

The night before His crucifixion, while in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed: “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). Our Lord was to accept this cup, which symbolized His going to the cross to take the sins of the world upon Himself—including your sins and my sins. He knew this would be agonizing beyond words, and yet He chose to accept His Father’s plan above His own. Friend, have you come to this place in prayer? Can you say, like Jesus, “Your will be done God, not mine.” Because when we can honestly pray like this, we find the greatest freedom in the world—the freedom that comes from surrender. Now that’s something to pray about!

Do you ever feel like you just need a few people to pray with? Sometimes circumstances in life can press on you to the point where you just know, only God can fix this. I can certainly relate as I’ve found myself in that difficult place before. In fact, this is one of reasons the Greater Peoria House of Prayer exists today. Over the years, folks from all walks of life have come through our doors to pray for their family, friendships, health, business, finances and so much more.
